Movie Review- Whats Eating Gilbert Grape

What's Eating Gilbert Grape

What's Eating Gilbert Grape is a story about a young man named Gilbert Grape, played by Johnny Depp, who has to take care of his brother, who has special needs. He also has to take care of a very obese mother who never leaves the house and can not really do anything for herself. Gilbert has a lot of responsibilities and stresses to deal with. I thought the movie was very good. The movie makes you think about the characters and what they are going through. At times, I thought it could have been more entertaining, but the movie is interesting and keeps the audience engaged. I really like how the movie shows the different relationships between characters, especially the ones between Gilbert and his brother, Arnie, and the relationship between Gilbert and his mother. I would give this movie a 8/10.

How I see (or hear) Music

Music is a pretty big part of my life. Although I have never played an instrument in my life, other than messing with a drum set or two, I do have a great appreciation for the music that I enjoy listening to. I take an interest in all aspects of a song, from the beat to the lyrics to the music video and everything in between. Music can change my mood and influence certain thoughts, and that is one of my favorite things about it. I love that if I have a bad day or something I can just put on my music and zone out and my mood will be fixed. The vibes from the music take me away from whatever may be bothering me at that time, which gives it a medicinal effect in a way. Whether I am listening to music and being crazy with my friends, or just chilling at my house with my headphones in, music almost always has some type of role in what I'm doing. Not only do I love listening to music, I really enjoy discussing it with other people. Me and my friends often debate over music and discuss different artists. What does music mean to you? What is your favorite genre and/or artist?

What I'm Listening to Now

As I said in my other posts, I am pretty much constantly listening to music. This type of post will be a common one. Every few days I'll post a song that I'm currently listening to and say a bit about it. So I'll get to it.

What I'm listening to now is a song by my favorite rapper at this time, Freddie Gibbs. The song is called The Ghetto. It's not a new song at all, but it has been a favorite of mine for a while now. I really like the beat of the song, and the lyrics are great. Gibbs tells a story of growing up and living in a rough place, while not having much. He details the different things he and others in his situation have to do to get by, and this song is relatable to a lot of people. Freddie Gibbs and his music have a very authentic vibe. He makes it very apparent that he is no poser and has really done what he says he has.

I hope you guys liked the song, but if not, that's cool too. Feel free to share your thoughts on the song and the artist. Also, what are you listening to now?

Finally

I know this is pretty late, but the day has finally come (about a week ago), for Lil Bibby's long awaited Free Crack mixtape to be released. After being pushed back several times, it finally happened. In my opinion, the wait was worth it. This mixtape did not disappoint me at all. If you're a fan of Lil Bibby and haven't listened to Free Crack yet, then you should go do that.

Vic Mensa

One of the things I'll be doing on this blog is exposing you guys to new music that you might like. I find most of my music by clicking from video to video on YouTube, and that's how I found the artist I'm posting about now. It is Vic Mensa. You may or may not be familiar with him. He isn't the most unknown rapper out there, but he definitely deserves more recognition and exposure for the amount of talent he has for being only 19 years old. He is a rapper from Chicago who stays away from the now typical Chicago trap-style music. He is known by some for working with Chance the Rapper on his newest album. Vic Mensa released his first solo mixtape this year titled INNANETAPE. Vic comes off as a pretty average 19 year old, with very above average musical talents. Songs like Orange Soda, Acid Trips to Vegas, Tweakin, and Whispers make him more than deserving of some more recognition. Vic Mensa is on the rise and I think he will be a very well known name soon. If you liked the song above or are interested in his other songs then you should definitely check out his mixtape.

INTRODUCTION

Hey, my names Chris and I'm writing this blog. I'm an 18 year old high school student from Boston. My Mind on Music is a blog, obviously about music. I listen to music almost constantly, so i figured it would be a good topic to blog about. Whether I'm at home, school, or anywhere else, I listen to music as much as possible. I am always on the hunt for new artists and songs to listen to. I am mainly interested in Hip-Hop/Rap, but i also listen to some other stuff. In my blog, I will post songs that I'm listening to and how I feel about them. I will also do reviews, or just share my opinion on songs or albums, and I would like to get some suggestions from anyone reading this blog on an album or something to listen and give my thoughts on. Another thing I plan on doing is exposing you guys to some new/unknown artists that I think you might like.  I'm always down to discuss an artist or whatever it may be about music so feel free to bring something up for discussion.
